Nyx: What you need and what to leave

Nyx has just hit Irish shores and the hunt to find a stockist is on, it's like a treasure hunt just for beauty bloggers. While it only seems to be in a few locations currently I already have my list of recommended products and not so recommended products which I purchased in Canada and online through and
Also please excuse my photographs of products - some of these were bought before I had a beauty blog so there are no nice untouched pictures, however it does mean you are getting reviews from someone who is really familiar with the products.

Nyx blush in taupe

Agurably one of nyx’s most famous products in the beauty world (at least in Ireland) is their blusher in taupe. Used by youtube goddess, Nikkietutorials, it is a perfect contour colour for our pale Irish skin. There isn’t much to say about it quality wise – it’s what we expect from nyx – great pigmentation, smooth, easy application. As with all contours a light hand is best as if over applied you can look a bit strange. I’ve applied this with many different brushes, both synthetic and natural and it applies brilliantly with all of them. I personally prefer using it with my Blank Canvas Cosmetics F26 but most contour brushes will do. This is a picture of my second one which is why it looks so untouched. This product is a must buy – go grab it fast though, I have a feeling it will be continuously out of stock for a while.

Nyx blush in peach

Nyx blush in peach is actually a lot more pink than the name would suggest. It has good pigmentation and is very blendable – there really isn’t a lot to say about it – it’s a nice blush but has no amazing qualities – unless you don’t have any blush I’d leave it.

Nyx blush in chocolate
This was bought as a contour colour but is too brown for my skin. I wouldn't recommend buying this though because I think contour colours should be a bit gray toned and this is more red.

Nyx Above and Beyond Full Coverage Concealer

One thing I really love about NYX is the brilliant shade range. Their concealer  in “porcelain” is a perfect example of this. Pale enough for even my sister (who is literally a warmed up white) the concealer is a cream consistency which means it is really effective at covering spots (note – because it is a cream is does crease under eyes so I don’t recommend it for concealing dark circles.  It has great pigmentation and great staying power, especially when set with a powder.  It is my go-to concealer, another must have for your list.

Nyx eyeshadow trio

Nyx have a huge selection of eyeshadow trios – I got this one when I was in Canada, I remember being at the stall and having a such a hard time deciding which one to get, with my boyfriend at the time trying to hurry me up (we obviously broke up a little while after because no one comes between a girl and her make up!). I don't even know what trio I have because the packaging is so worn but it should be fairly easy enough to pick out. This is a brilliant palette for anyone – if it had a black in there it would be a brilliant dupe for UDs naked basics palate. The eyeshadows are brilliantly pigmented and blend together  beautifully. If you are looking for some basic matte brown eyeshadows then thgese are for you.

Nyx eye primer

If you are looking for an inexpensive, good quality primer then this is it. To use you barely dip your finger into the pot and smear the product out over the eye (be careful not to put on too much though, especially if you have a coloured one). I bought this primer in the colour “skin” but my sister has it is “white”. I bought mine from the internet and "skin" looked a lot more like my skin colour than the orange/brown colour it is. Disappointment about the colour aside this is a very good primer – definitely the best drugstore/phgarmacy brand concealer I’ve ever used, however if you are purchasing this I would recommend buying it in “white” rather than the skin colour because it is a good bit darker than it should be for pale skin and can look a big strange if you don’t cover it all.

Nyx soft matte lip creams

Amsterdam and Sao Paulo
These lip creams were my first experience of having a matte lip (besides putting translucent powder over my normal lipstick). In case you don’t know I am obsessed with matte lips – I think they look so classy and make bright colours really wearable. Nyx matte lip creams come in a variety of colours – all named after cities – the two I have are Amsterdam and Sao Paulo. These glide on like a dream and the applicator really helps with precision. They don’t have the best staying power – they do tend to come off after eating or drinking but a second layer can be applied over any patches easily enough. These are definitely not as drying as some other matte lipsticks but I wouldn't exactly call them moisterising. These aren’t a must have but if you do like rocking a matte lip then these are well worth checking out!

Amersterdam is a pink toned red – it starts as more of a true red but fades to a more pink toned hue after a while. If you are looking for a true matte red this isn’t it. Personally I would prefer if it kept the colour that it’s applied as because I’m not the biggest fan of pink reds but if pink tones are your thing then you will probably like this

Sao Paulo is a gorgeous natural pink which would be a great product to try if you’ve never worn a matte lip before because it will ease you into it.

Ultra Pearl Mania in Nude and Pearl

Nyx Ultra Pearl Mania

These are loose pearl eyeshadows. I thought I would use these all the time but I've barely touched them. They can be quite messy with a lot of fallout and the packaging is annoying because either barely any comes out or a whole load does! They are nice and pearly but just not for me I don't think....

Nyx black eyeshadow

Oh Nyx black eyeshadow, how do I love thee? The ultimate black eyeshadow, it has incredible pigmentation, is super smooth, doesn’t have a lot of fallout and is as black as a black page in a windowless room during a blackout. I use it for the outer corners of my eyes and as a powder eye liner. This is everything an eyeshadow should be, PUT IT ON YOUR SHOPPING LIST

Nyx Jumbo eye pencil in sparkle nude, cottage cheese, iced mocha and straberry milk
Nyx jumbo liner

There is quite a bit of hype surrounding nyx jumbo liners – which I don’t really buy into. They are good products but I don’t think they deserve the cult following they seem to have. I use mine as liners but you can also use them as eyeshadow sticks.

Nyx jumbo lipliner in burgandy and lipstick in hebe
Nyx round lipstick in Hebe
This I am on the fence about - it is very pigmented and goes on well but has a slight metallic finish which I'm not a fan of....that's personal preference though and the downside of buying online.

Nyx jumbo lip liner in burgandy

To be honest I haven’t used this product very often – when I got it I thought I would use it all the time but for some reason I just haven’t and I’m not sure exactly why. It’s something I always overlook in favour of other products which doesn’t bode well for it really, it’s forgettable

Nyx powder liner

One of the only NYX products I don’t like are their powder eyeliners. I bought them because I wanted a hazy liner so it would look like I wasn’t even wearing liner – I just wanted to give my eyes a bit of definition. For a liner the applicators are quite thick. These liners also have lots and lots of fallout  - I would give these a miss.

Nyx slide on liner in glitzy gold, nyx wonder pencil in light
Nyx Slide on liner in Glitzy Gold
Slide on liners seem to have a bit of a cult following however I am not that big a fan. They are nice liners but they don't stay one all day as claimed and are just a bit underwhelming when the product name is so long (the full name is "slide on glide on stay on and most definitely a turn on liner")

Nyx wonder pencil
These pencils will do three things: conceal blemishes, line lips against bleeding and brighten eyes along the water line and they actually do what they say they will which is rare in a beauty product. These come in different skin tone colours and mine is in "light"

Do you have any Nyx product recommendations for me? I'm going up the country next week to find a stand and raid it so I need to be armed with a big list to make sure I don't forget something...

  1. Great detailed post!! So far I'm loving the butter glosses and the soft kajal liner the most, really want to try their dewy setting spray too!

  2. Really want to try taupe and a few butter glosses!

Your comment makes my day :)
